By day, I'm a user experience designer; by evenings/weekends, I write novels from my home in Scappoose, Ore. My newest is Awake in the World, due February 2019 from Roaring Brook Press; my most recent, Eleanor, was published by Crown in 2016 and has since been translated into German, Portuguese, and Turkish.

Squishin' around

This past weekend, I finished rewriting the first draft of Next Project. (Not finished, though — I've got a bunch of little edits I have to make in the next two weeks.) Brain tired—tiiiiired—I gathered up the Squish, and we had some adventures.

We visited our community library for a Dragons & Unicorn party. Squish made a unicorn mask. Her unicorn name was Giggly McGiddyup; mine was Buttercup Daydreamer.

Giggly and I hung out at Starbucks. I wrote a bit about our day, and she blazed to the end of a book, which completed her Powell's Books Summer Reading Challenge. Afterward, we visited Powell's to claim her reward (a $5 gift card), and she picked out a couple of books—a unicorn graphic novel called Melowy , or something, and this lovely book called Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx .

Afterward, we parked in the garage of my workplace building downtown, which was near our next destination. Each time she's here, Squish gets distracted by the wall o' plants in the building's lobby.

Next destination: Wizbangbar for soft serve!

We closed out the weekend playing Aer: Memories of Old , which is Squish's new favorite game (and a really gorgeous one).

I have a ridiculous amount of work to do between now and the end of July: a whole stack of edits for that first draft of Next Book, and I've got to review the latest copyedits of Awake in the World. Once August comes, I haven't decided which I'll do first: more adventures with the Squish, or five hundred straight days of sleep.
